Keeping Up with the Recreational Needs of a Community

Skateboarding and bike jumps bring a new generation of kids to an iconic town park

Nobody knows the Town of Cary like American Engineering’s Jay Gilleece. Before starting his own engineering firm decades ago, which later became part of American Engineering, he was Cary’s town engineer during its initial growth explosion.

Godbold Park is one of Cary’s busiest recreation facilities with a variety of amenities. Whether you are looking for tennis, basketball, playgrounds, trails, dog parks, picnic areas, or community areas, this park has it, including access to Black Creek Greenway with access to the Northwoods Greenway.

When the Town wanted to create a new type of recreation facility, they called Jay Gilleece of American Engineering. Cary Action Sports Park also called Sk8 – Cary is one of the Triangle’s premier skate parks. Serving skateboards, inline and quad skates, the 12,000 square-foot outdoor transition and street course consisting of rails, banks, ledges, quarter-pipes, fly boxes and half-pipes from three to nine feet tall. Ramps are made of wood and Skatelite Pro surface and are arranged to challenge all skill levels.

This type of facility has more engineering challenges than most recreations spaces. Ensuring safety, managing stormwater runoff, and meeting all of the required functionality requires a different type of creativity.
