When Pulte Homes needed an engineering firm to design one of its signature neighborhoods in South Charlotte it turned to American Engineering. Located in one of the fastest growing areas of the Carolinas, the subdivision design had another challenge – build an extension of Ardrey Kell Road which was a key link in Charlotte’s major street network.
American Engineering’s in-house transportation engineers worked closely with land its development design team to provide engineering solutions for the new 100 lot subdivision which included 2,500 linear feet of roadway. The transportation design and project management challenges also involved engineering one the regions largest roundabouts – at the intersection of Ardrey Kell Road and Tilley Morris Road. The complex roundabout is almost 200 feet in diameter and was designed to accommodate a future two-lane roundabout and intersects a busy state-maintained road and a city road.
While the site had a variety of topographic challenges, as well as streams and other constraints to accommodate, the biggest challenge was the schedule. The City of Charlotte’s new ordinance was just weeks away from being implemented but American Engineering was able to submit for permit just hours before the ordinance deadline, allowing the site to be grandfathered into the existing standards.
