Since we are American Engineering, and as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, today we recognize Meck Dec Day.
On May 20, 1775, Mecklenburg County leaders are believed to have become the first citizens in the American colonies to declare independence from British rule, more than a year before the Declaration of Independence was signed.
A key figure in this story is Captain James Jack, a Charlotte tavern owner who rode to Philadelphia to deliver the Mecklenburg Resolves to the Continental Congress, representing the determination and spirit of our local community. North Carolina’s “First in Freedom” heritage can still be found throughout the state today – from the dates displayed on the North Carolina state flag to local tributes like Olde Mecklenburg Brewery’s Captain Jack beer.
At American Engineering, we’re proud to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary throughout the coming year. And today, we pause to recognize the patriots of Mecklenburg County who were truly ahead of their time more than a year before the rest of the nation.
